A Brief Note on the Death of Jamal Khashoggi

On the date when Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in a foreign land, he might have never thought of welcoming the assassination by unknown Saudi officials. The disappearance of Khashoggi soon has sparked an outrage over the world, especially the West, which repeatedly argued for the freedom of the Washington Post reporter and thorough investigation of the incident. Despite various explanations offered by the Saudi government and the Turkish, both the Europeans and the Americans were unsatisfied with the answers.

The Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, was suspected to be the killer. Unlike the crown in Britain, he seldom listens to the public and different voice. Nevertheless, there is no direct evidence to prove that Khashoggi was assassinated by the order of the crown prince. Whether Saudi Arabia is going to be punished by the West or not, the question chiefly depends on the attitude of Donald Trump. The America holds a massive interest with Saudi Arabia, or at least, they do not see each other as a complete rivalry. Saudi Arabia is an important alliance of the US to work as a counter-balance of Iran in the middle East. The cooperation and interests between the Saudi and the US formulate the hesitation of whether the US should take a further action.

All in all, perhaps Saudi Arabia did not expect that this incident would rise such a great echo in the world and eventually become an international political struggle. As an ordinary citizen in Hong Kong, I strongly oppose the violence imposed by the Saudi. The vanishing of Jamal Khashoggi certainly threatens the freedom of press and is not tolerated by every soul in the world.
